How To Maintain Spirit Level Accuracy

A spirit level is an essential tool for woodworkers and construction contractors. It is a simple device comprising a sealed glass tube partially filled with alcohol or other liquid and an air bubble to indicate how parallel or perpendicular a surface is. Most woodwork and construction jobs need the highest levels of accuracy, which can be achieved with the help of spirit levels. It is a tool you cannot do without in carpentry or construction.

Maintaining the accuracy spirit level

Although the spirit level is a valuable tool, it will only be helpful if you maintain its accuracy. However, do not worry. There are ways to test the accuracy on any spirit level properly, and they are as under:

Steps to check horizontal accuracy of spirit levels:

  1. Place the spirit level on a horizontal surface and make a mark on the surface at either end of the level
  2. Take the bubble reading and record the position
  3. Next, turn the level 180 degrees to place the other end of the level at the mark you made previously
  4. Read the level
  5. The spirit level is accurate if the bubble returns to the same spot as before. If it doesn’t, it isn’t accurate
  6. You can repeat the process to validate

Steps to check vertical accuracy of spirit levels:

  1. Place the spirit level vertically against the surface, such as a wall, and mark one end of the level on it
  2. Take the bubble reading and record the position
  3. Next, turn the level 180 degrees to place the other end of the level at the mark you made previously
  4. Read the level
  5. The spirit level is accurate if the bubble returns to the same spot as before. If it doesn’t, it isn’t accurate
  6. You should repeat the process to validate

Choosing the right spirit level for your job

Spirit levels come in all sizes and shapes, and sometimes it isn’t easy to choose from the numerous options. If you are confused, you should consider the following factors before selecting the right level:

Level Vials:

When choosing a spirit level, you should ensure that the vials on the level are strong enough to withstand any temperature changes or static electricity. You should also check for luminescent reflectors and magnifying lenses. These are crucial features that offer good clarity in all light conditions, and they are desirable if you work in low-light conditions.

Tolerance:

Before choosing your spirit level, you should ensure it gives you accurate measurements. You can check the tolerance for levelling in standard and reverse positions.

Weight:

while it is better to have a lightweight spirit level, you should ensure the level weighs over 500gm to guarantee strength. It should also come with shock-absorbing rubber endcaps to protect it from damage.

Some other desirable features include:

  • Dedicated wall grips on both sides provide symmetrical use and prevent damage to the work surface
  • Soft Grip handles with cushioning for a better and more comfortable grip over a long duration
  • Non-slip handle to avoid the slipping of level in wet conditions
  • Epoxy-locked vials
  • Plastic ABS vial housings
  • A powder-coated, anti-stick coating
