Digital technology keeps on providing us with surprises as it continues to evolve. In the last few years, big tech companies have begun talking more and more about the concept of creating a metaverse to transform the way we interact with one another. But what exactly is the metaverse? How does it work in 2022? And how can ordinary citizens start using it? Will it transform the way businesses operate in the future? Carry on reading to find out more about the metaverse.

What Metaverse Means

The metaverse represents a virtual universe where users can interact, play and work together. As a result of many in the tech industry believing the metaverse to be the next step in the future of the internet and digital spaces, at the moment, many big tech companies are doing their best to create leading metaverse platforms. It’s widely thought the metaverse will be a 3-D virtual environment that can be accessed through standard computers, as well as virtual and augmented reality headsets. So, more people having virtual reality headsets at home may become much more common in the future. Picture this; you are taking part in a virtual meeting with your boss as your 3-D characters chat away next to each other while you wear your virtual reality headset. Could the metaverse make the internet experience much more personable and similar to real-life in-person interactions?

How the Metaverse Can Be Used

Some believe one of the goals of creating a metaverse is to facilitate business communications and to network with business associates in a virtual reality 3-D world. Retail owners, for example, could set up shops in the metaverse and welcome customers to come and take a look at their displays and see whether they would like to buy their products and services.

The metaverse also personalizes the internet experience further. The avatars will provide users with a clear identity on the internet. The metaverse could also be considered a great marketing opportunity for brands. Companies could use the metaverse as an ideal place to advertise their goods and services directly to consumers and increase sales. Modern companies must ensure they make an effort to occupy the spaces where their customers are. Brand visibility is essential, and using the metaverse may be an excellent way for brands to expand.

How You Can Enter the Metaverse

The metaverse is a new version of the internet that focuses more on virtual worlds. As a result, VR headsets are likely to become the norm to enable you to access the metaverse.

Platforms Currently Offering the Metaverse Experience

One of the first major tech companies to announce that it decided to embrace the metaverse experience entirely was Facebook, even changing its official name in October 2021 and rebranding to Meta Platforms. It seems that Mark Zuckerberg considers his company as being a standout innovative market leader at the forefront of the transition to the metaverse.  However, fellow pioneers in the metaverse criticized Facebook as missing the point entirely of the metaverse and what it represents by failing to grant digital ownership to businesses wanting to trade with customers through the virtual space. Yat Sia, the Chairman and Co-Founder of Animoca Brands and a keen investor in metaverse platforms, came out and called Facebook’s efforts to rebrand and create a metaverse platform as a ‘fake metaverse.’ It is still unclear how everyday people, business owners, and creatives may use the Meta Platform Inc’s platform and not end up having their actions on the metaverse dictated to by a corporate giant.

NFTs and the Metaverse

NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) can often take the form of unique digital files such as photos, videos, audio clips, and so on, which cannot be replicated and reproduced. Whereas collectors’ items such as paintings, sculptures, and artwork were traditionally stored in antique dealerships and art galleries, NFTs in 2022 are unique, non-interchangeable units of data stored on a blockchain. NFTs have become increasingly popular in recent times, and collectors and enthusiasts like that they can be traded securely and transparently. Potentially, the metaverse could be a place where NFTs thrive and allows those who own them to open their doors to a constant stream of paying clients.

Much like the metaverse itself, NFTs are a relatively new technological development. It will probably take a few more years for the public to understand what NFTs are, how they work, how they are stored digitally, and the reasons behind their valuation. The world will not convert to the metaverse overnight. It may take a while before using the metaverse becomes commonplace, and everyone across the globe gets used to how they can best navigate this new uncharted digital space. Perhaps, soon enough, using the metaverse will become such an everyday thing that grandparents will put on their virtual reality headsets to communicate with family and friends on the metaverse space.

The metaverse is still very much in its infancy. For the most part, across the globe, individuals adapted with ease to working from home and so on during the pandemic, showing that we have become far more tech-savvy as a society. We now possess an enhanced understanding of how to use the internet to communicate effectively with one another. The next step could well be entering the metaverse.
